Argentina 1-0 Switzerland Last 16

An extra time winner from Angel Di Maria settled the win for Argentina and progression to the quarter finals. As Switzerland are undone and defeated in a cruel way.

The goal came in the 118th minutes as four time ballon d'or winner Lionel Messi had laid the ball into Di Maria on the right hand side. The Real Madrid winger had taken his time to roll the ball past the Swiss goalkeeper and celebrate with his team mates.

In the first 45 minutes the game was very open and could go either way. Although Switzerland did have the best two chances to score.

The first was from Granit Xhaka on 27 minutes as the Swiss star Man Xherdan Shaqiri had wriggled past a couple of players down the right hand side and then fired a ball back to the penalty spot where Xhaka had been. His connection on the ball was perfect but the Argentine goalkeeper Serigo Romero pushed the ball away with his legs.

Into the second half and it became evident that Argentina were running out of ideas as they had started shooting from distance. Messi did however come close on 60 minutes as his volley from outside the box went just over the bar. 

Argentina will now face either Belgium or USA in the quarter finals as the luck of the draw must have favoured them more. Although Switzerland will now return home after a very pleasing World Cup that they should not be ashamed of.
